[422] Then, Aggivessana, this occurred to me: "Why should I not meditate the breathless meditative absorption (appāṇakaṃ jhānaṃ)?" So, Aggivessana, I cut off the in-breaths and out-breaths through the mouth, through the nose, and through the ears. And, Aggivessana, when the in-breaths and out-breaths were cut off through the mouth, through the nose, and through the ears, there was an intense burning in my body. Just as if, Aggivessana, two strong men, having seized a weaker man by both arms, were to burn and scorch him over a pit of glowing coals, even so, Aggivessana, when the in-breaths and out-breaths were cut off through the mouth, through the nose, and through the ears, there was an intense burning in my body. But, Aggivessana, my energy (vīriya) was aroused and unflagging, my mindfulness (sati) was established and unconfused; yet my body was overwrought and untranquil, because I was overcome by that painful striving. Yet, Aggivessana, even such painful feeling (vedanā) as arose did not overwhelm my mind (citta) and remain.
Moreover, Aggivessana, deities, having seen me, said thus: "The ascetic Gotama is dead." Some deities said thus: "The ascetic Gotama is not dead, but he is dying." Some deities said thus: "The ascetic Gotama is not dead, nor is he dying; the ascetic Gotama is an arahant, for such indeed is the abiding of an arahant."
