[440] Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now on that occasion a pernicious view (diṭṭhigata) of this kind had arisen in a bhikkhu named Sāti, the fisherman's son: "As I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One, it is this very same consciousness (viññāṇa) that runs on and wanders through the round of rebirths, not another."
Several bhikkhus heard: "A pernicious view of this kind, it seems, has arisen in the bhikkhu named Sāti, the fisherman's son: 'As I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One, it is this very same consciousness that runs on and wanders through the round of rebirths, not another.'" Then those bhikkhus approached the bhikkhu Sāti, the fisherman's son, and having approached, said this to him: "Is it true, friend Sāti, that a pernicious view of this kind has arisen in you: 'As I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One, it is this very same consciousness that runs on and wanders through the round of rebirths, not another'?"
"Exactly so, friends, do I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One: it is this very same consciousness that runs on and wanders through the round of rebirths, not another."
Then those bhikkhus, desiring to detach the bhikkhu Sāti, the fisherman's son, from that pernicious view, questioned him, pressed him, and cross-examined him: "Do not speak thus, friend Sāti; do not misrepresent the Blessed One. It is not good to misrepresent the Blessed One, for the Blessed One would not speak thus. In many ways, friend Sāti, consciousness has been declared by the Blessed One to be dependently arisen (paṭiccasamuppanna), since apart from a condition there is no origination of consciousness."
Yet the bhikkhu Sāti, the fisherman's son, though being thus questioned, pressed, and cross-examined by those bhikkhus, obstinately grasping and adhering to that same pernicious view, kept declaring: "Exactly so, friends, do I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One: it is this very same consciousness that runs on and wanders through the round of rebirths, not another."
