[444] Bhikkhus, consciousness (viññāṇa) is reckoned by the very condition dependent upon which it arises. Consciousness that arises dependent on the eye and forms is reckoned simply as eye-consciousness; consciousness that arises dependent on the ear and sounds is reckoned simply as ear-consciousness; consciousness that arises dependent on the nose and odors is reckoned simply as nose-consciousness; consciousness that arises dependent on the tongue and tastes is reckoned simply as tongue-consciousness; consciousness that arises dependent on the body and tangibles is reckoned simply as body-consciousness; consciousness that arises dependent on the mind and dhammas is reckoned simply as mind-consciousness.
Just as, bhikkhus, a fire is reckoned by the very condition dependent upon which it burns: a fire that burns dependent on logs is reckoned simply as a log fire; a fire that burns dependent on wood chips is reckoned simply as a wood-chip fire; a fire that burns dependent on grass is reckoned simply as a grass fire; a fire that burns dependent on cow-dung is reckoned simply as a cow-dung fire; a fire that burns dependent on husks is reckoned simply as a husk fire; a fire that burns dependent on rubbish is reckoned simply as a rubbish fire — even so, bhikkhus, consciousness is reckoned by the very condition dependent upon which it arises.
