[449] "'With the cessation (nirodha) of birth (jāti) there is the cessation of aging and death (jarā-maraṇa)' — so indeed this was said. Now, bhikkhus, is it with the cessation of birth that there is the cessation of aging and death, or not — or how is it in this case?"
"Venerable sir, with the cessation of birth there is the cessation of aging and death; so it is for us in this case: with the cessation of birth there is the cessation of aging and death."
"'With the cessation of existence (bhava) there is the cessation of birth' — so indeed this was said. Now, bhikkhus, is it with the cessation of existence that there is the cessation of birth, or not — or how is it in this case?"
"Venerable sir, with the cessation of existence there is the cessation of birth; so it is for us in this case: with the cessation of existence there is the cessation of birth."
