[489] The Blessed One said this: "Householders, one is a practicer contrary to Dhamma, of unrighteous conduct (adhammacārī visamacārī), in three ways by body; one is a practicer contrary to Dhamma, of unrighteous conduct, in four ways by speech; one is a practicer contrary to Dhamma, of unrighteous conduct, in three ways by mind.
"And how, householders, is one a practicer contrary to Dhamma, of unrighteous conduct, in three ways by body? Here, householders, a certain person is a killer of living beings (pāṇātipātī): cruel, bloody-handed, given to blows and slaughter, shameless, having no compassion for all living beings.
"He is a taker of what is not given (adinnādāyī): whatever is another's wealth and property, that he takes, ungiven, in a manner reckoned as theft.
"He is one who engages in misconduct in sensual pleasures (kāmesu micchācārī): those women who are protected by their mother … with such as these he engages in intercourse. Thus indeed, householders, one is a practicer contrary to Dhamma, of unrighteous conduct, in three ways by body.
"And how, householders, is one a practicer contrary to Dhamma, of unrighteous conduct, in four ways by speech? Here, householders, a certain person is a speaker of falsehood (musāvādī): … he is a speaker of deliberate untruth.
"He is one of divisive speech (pisuṇavāco): having heard here, he tells it there … he is a speaker of speech that creates factions.
"He is one of harsh speech (pharusavāco): such speech as is rough, coarse … such speech he is a speaker of.
"He is an idle chatterer (samphappalāpī): speaking at the wrong time, speaking what is not fact … (speech that is) unbounded and unconnected with benefit. Thus indeed, householders, one is a practicer contrary to Dhamma, of unrighteous conduct, in four ways by speech.
"And how, householders, is one a practicer contrary to Dhamma, of unrighteous conduct, in three ways by mind? Here, householders, a certain person is covetous (abhijjhālu): … (longing,) 'Oh, that it might be mine!'
"He is one of a mind of ill will (byāpannacitto), with intentions of a corrupted mind: 'May these beings be slain, or … or may they not exist!'
"He is one of wrong view (micchādiṭṭhiko), of distorted vision: 'There is nothing given, nothing offered, nothing sacrificed … having realized (this world and the other world) for themselves by direct knowledge, make it known.' Thus indeed, householders, one is a practicer contrary to Dhamma, of unrighteous conduct, in three ways by mind.
"Thus, householders, it is by reason of such conduct contrary to Dhamma, such unrighteous conduct, that some beings here, with the breakup of the body, after death, are reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, the lower world, hell."
