[491] Householders, if one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct (dhammacārī samacārī), should wish: "Oh, that with the breaking up of the body, after death, I might be reborn in companionship with affluent khattiyas!" — it is indeed possible that, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he will be reborn in companionship with affluent khattiyas. For what reason? Because he is one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct. Householders, if one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct, should wish: "Oh, that with the breaking up of the body, after death, I might be reborn in companionship with affluent brahmins …" … "in companionship with affluent householders!" — it is indeed possible that, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he will be reborn in companionship with affluent householders. For what reason? Because he is one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct. Householders, if one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct, should wish: "Oh, that with the breaking up of the body, after death, I might be reborn in companionship with the devas of the Four Great Kings!" — it is indeed possible that, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he will be reborn in companionship with the devas of the Four Great Kings. For what reason? Because he is one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct. Householders, if one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct, should wish: "Oh, that with the breaking up of the body, after death, I might be reborn in companionship with the Tāvatiṃsa devas …" … "the Yāma devas …" … "the Tusita devas …" … "the Nimmānaratī devas …" … "the Paranimmitavasavattī devas …" … "in companionship with the devas of Brahmā's retinue!" — it is indeed possible that, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he will be reborn in companionship with the devas of Brahmā's retinue. For what reason? Because he is one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct. Householders, if one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct, should wish: "Oh, that with the breaking up of the body, after death, I might be reborn in companionship with the Ābhā devas!" — it is indeed possible that, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he will be reborn in companionship with the Ābhā devas. For what reason? Because he is one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct. Householders, if one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct, should wish: "Oh, that with the breaking up of the body, after death, I might be reborn in companionship with the Parittābhā devas …" … "the Appamāṇābhā devas …" … "the Ābhassara devas …" … "the Parittasubha devas …" … "the Appamāṇasubha devas …" … "the Subhakiṇha devas …" … "the Vehapphala devas …" … "the Aviha devas …" … "the Atappa devas …" … "the Sudassa devas …" … "the Sudassī devas …" … "the Akaniṭṭha devas …" … "the devas of the base of the infinity of space …" … "the devas of the base of the infinity of consciousness …" … "the devas of the base of nothingness …" … "in companionship with the devas of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception!" — it is indeed possible that, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he will be reborn in companionship with the devas of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. For what reason? Because he is one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct. Householders, if one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct, should wish: "Oh, that by the destruction of the taints (āsava) I might, in this very life, realize for myself with direct knowledge the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and having entered upon them, dwell therein!" — it is indeed possible that, by the destruction of the taints, he will, in this very life, realize for himself with direct knowledge the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and having entered upon them, dwell therein. For what reason? Because he is one who conducts himself by Dhamma, one of righteous conduct.
