Mūlapariyāyavagga

Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 12 · Section 5

[5] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu who is an arahant, whose taints (āsava) are destroyed, who has lived the life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached his own true goal, utterly destroyed the fetters of existence, and is rightly liberated through final knowledge — he too directly knows earth as earth. Having directly known earth as earth, he does not conceive earth, does not conceive in earth, does not conceive from earth, does not conceive 'earth is mine,' does not delight in earth. Why is that? Because he is free from lust (rāga) owing to the destruction of lust. … He directly knows water … fire … air … beings … gods … Pajāpati … Brahmā … the gods of Streaming Radiance (Ābhassara) … the gods of Refulgent Glory (Subhakiṇha) … the gods of Great Fruit (Vehapphala) … the Overlord (Abhibhū) … the base of the infinity of space … the base of the infinity of consciousness … the base of nothingness … the base of neither perception nor non-perception … the seen … the heard … the sensed … the cognized … oneness … diversity … the all … He directly knows Nibbāna as Nibbāna. Having directly known Nibbāna as Nibbāna, he does not conceive Nibbāna, does not conceive in Nibbāna, does not conceive from Nibbāna, does not conceive 'Nibbāna is mine,' does not delight in Nibbāna. Why is that? Because he is free from lust owing to the destruction of lust. The delimitation of the fourth section of the method, by way of the one whose taints are destroyed.
