Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 12 · Section 508

[508] "Lady, what is the noble eightfold path?" "Friend Visākha, this very noble eightfold path, namely: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration (samādhi)." "Lady, is the noble eightfold path conditioned (saṅkhata) or unconditioned (asaṅkhata)?" "Friend Visākha, the noble eightfold path is conditioned." "Lady, are the three aggregates included in the noble eightfold path, or is the noble eightfold path included in the three aggregates?" "Friend Visākha, the three aggregates are not included in the noble eightfold path; rather, friend Visākha, the noble eightfold path is included in the three aggregates. Right speech, right action, and right livelihood — these states are included in the aggregate of virtue. Right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration — these states are included in the aggregate of concentration. Right view and right intention — these states are included in the aggregate of wisdom." "Lady, what is concentration? What states are the basis (nimitta) of concentration? What states are the requisites of concentration? What is the development of concentration?" "Friend Visākha, whatever is unification of the mind (citta) — this is concentration. The four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) are the basis of concentration. The four right strivings (sammappadhāna) are the requisites of concentration. The cultivation, development, and making much of these very same states — this, herein, is the development of concentration."
