[518] "Bhikkhus, and what is the undertaking of dhamma (dhammasamādāna) that is painful in the present but ripens as pleasure in the future? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is by nature of strongly lustful (rāga) temperament; he frequently experiences suffering (dukkha) and grief born of lust. He is by nature of strongly hateful temperament; he frequently experiences suffering and grief born of hatred. He is by nature of strongly deluded temperament; he frequently experiences suffering and grief born of delusion. Though touched by suffering and by grief, weeping with a tearful face, he lives the holy life complete and pure. With the breaking up of the body, after death, he reappears in a good destination, in a heavenly world. This, bhikkhus, is called the undertaking of dhamma that is painful in the present but ripens as pleasure in the future."
