[536] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, by a bhikkhu who is an inquirer (vīmaṃsaka), not knowing how to encompass the mind of another (parassa cetopariyāyaṃ ajānantena), an examination should be made of the Tathāgata, in order to know whether he is a Fully Awakened One (sammāsambuddha) or not."
"Venerable sir, our teachings are rooted in the Blessed One, guided by the Blessed One, have the Blessed One as their refuge. It would be good indeed, venerable sir, if the Blessed One himself would make clear the meaning of this statement. Having heard it from the Blessed One, the bhikkhus will bear it in mind."
"Then, bhikkhus, listen and attend well; I shall speak."
"Yes, venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One.
