[54] The Venerable Sāriputta said this: "Friends, these four kinds of individuals are found existing in the world. Which four? Here, friends, a certain individual who has a blemish (aṅgaṇa) does not understand as it really is (yathābhūta): 'There is a blemish within me.' But here, friends, a certain individual who has a blemish understands as it really is: 'There is a blemish within me.' Here, friends, a certain individual who has no blemish does not understand as it really is: 'There is no blemish within me.' But here, friends, a certain individual who has no blemish understands as it really is: 'There is no blemish within me.'
Therein, friends, the individual who, having a blemish, does not understand as it really is: 'There is a blemish within me' — of these two individuals who alike have a blemish, this one is declared the inferior person. Therein, friends, the individual who, having a blemish, understands as it really is: 'There is a blemish within me' — of these two individuals who alike have a blemish, this one is declared the superior person.
Therein, friends, the individual who, having no blemish, does not understand as it really is: 'There is no blemish within me' — of these two individuals who alike have no blemish, this one is declared the inferior person. Therein, friends, the individual who, having no blemish, understands as it really is: 'There is no blemish within me' — of these two individuals who alike have no blemish, this one is declared the superior person."
