[566] "What kind of hell was it
where Dūsī roasted,
having assaulted the disciple Vidhura
and the brahmin Kakusandha?
There were a hundred iron spikes,
each bringing its own separately felt pain.
Such was the hell
where Dūsī roasted,
having assaulted the disciple Vidhura
and the brahmin Kakusandha.
The bhikkhu who directly knows this,
a disciple of the Buddha —
assaulting such a bhikkhu,
Dark One (Kaṇha), you will come to suffering (dukkha).
In the middle of the lake stand celestial mansions (vimāna)
that endure for an eon,
beryl-hued, beautiful,
flaming, radiant;
there nymphs (accharā) dance,
many, of diverse hues.
The bhikkhu who directly knows this,
a disciple of the Buddha —
assaulting such a bhikkhu,
Dark One, you will come to suffering.
He who, urged by the Buddha,
while the Saṅgha of bhikkhus looked on,
shook the mansion of Migāra's mother
with his big toe —
The bhikkhu who directly knows this,
a disciple of the Buddha —
assaulting such a bhikkhu,
Dark One, you will come to suffering.
He who shook the Vejayanta Palace
with his big toe,
firm with the strength of psychic power,
and stirred the deities to a sense of urgency —
The bhikkhu who directly knows this,
a disciple of the Buddha —
assaulting such a bhikkhu,
Dark One, you will come to suffering.
He who questioned Sakka
in the Vejayanta Palace:
'Friend, do you know
the deliverances through the destruction of craving (taṇhā)?'
and to whom Sakka, asked the question,
answered in accordance with it —
The bhikkhu who directly knows this,
a disciple of the Buddha —
assaulting such a bhikkhu,
Dark One, you will come to suffering.
He who questioned Brahmā
before the Sudhammā assembly:
'Friend, do you still hold the view
that you formerly held?
Do you see the radiance
passing beyond the Brahmā-world?'
and to whom Brahmā answered
in due order, in accordance with the question:
'Dear sir, I do not hold that view
which I formerly held;
I see the radiance
passing beyond the Brahmā-world.
How then could I say today,
"I am permanent, eternal"?' —
The bhikkhu who directly knows this,
a disciple of the Buddha —
assaulting such a bhikkhu,
Dark One, you will come to suffering.
He who touched the peak of great Neru
by means of liberation (vimokkha),
and the forest of the Pubbavidehas,
and the men who dwell upon the earth —
The bhikkhu who directly knows this,
a disciple of the Buddha —
assaulting such a bhikkhu,
Dark One, you will come to suffering.
Fire indeed does not intend,
'I shall burn the fool';
yet the fool who assails
the blazing fire is himself burnt.
Even so, Māra,
having assailed the Tathāgata,
you will burn yourself,
like a fool touching fire.
Māra has generated demerit
by assailing the Tathāgata.
Evil One, do you imagine,
'My evil will not ripen'?
For the doer, evil is heaped up;
he wails for a long time.
Māra, turn away in disgust from the Buddha;
hold no hope regarding the bhikkhus!"
Thus did the bhikkhu rebuke Māra
in the Bhesakaḷā Grove;
whereupon that spirit (yakkha), dejected,
vanished right there.
The Māratajjanīya Sutta, the tenth, is finished.
The Cūḷayamaka Vagga, the fifth.
Its summary (uddāna):
Sāleyya, Verañja, the Vedallas,
the Lesser and Greater Dhammasamādāna,
the Vīmaṃsaka, Brahmā, and Dūsī the Māra —
the fifth, an excellent chapter.
The Mūlapaṇṇāsaka is finished.
