[114] Therein, householders, a wise person reflects thus: "If indeed there is efficacy of action (kiriyā), then this good individual, upon the breakup of the body, after death, will be reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world. But even granting that there is no efficacy of action—let the word of those honorable ascetics and brahmins be true—still this good individual is praised by the wise in this very life as a virtuous individual, one of right view, one who affirms the doctrine of the efficacy of action (kiriyavāda)." If indeed there is efficacy of action, then for this good individual there is a winning throw (kaṭaggāha) on both counts: in that he is praised by the wise in this very life, and in that, upon the breakup of the body, after death, he will be reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world. Thus this incontrovertible teaching (apaṇṇaka dhamma), well grasped and well undertaken by him, stands covering both sides, and leaves aside the ground of the unskillful.
