[163] "Indeed, Bhaddāli, a transgression (accaya) overcame you — so foolish, so confused, so unskillful were you — in that, when a training rule (sikkhāpada) was being laid down by me and the community of bhikkhus was undertaking the training, you declared your unwillingness to endeavor in it. Moreover, Bhaddāli, this circumstance was not penetrated by you: 'The Blessed One is dwelling at Sāvatthī; the Blessed One too will know me thus: "The bhikkhu named Bhaddāli is one who does not fulfil the training in the Teacher's dispensation."' This circumstance too, Bhaddāli, was not penetrated by you.
"Moreover, Bhaddāli, this circumstance was not penetrated by you: 'Many bhikkhus have entered upon the rains residence at Sāvatthī; they too will know me thus: "The bhikkhu named Bhaddāli is one who does not fulfil the training in the Teacher's dispensation."' This circumstance too, Bhaddāli, was not penetrated by you.
"Moreover, Bhaddāli, this circumstance was not penetrated by you: 'Many bhikkhunīs have entered upon the rains residence at Sāvatthī; they too will know me thus: "The bhikkhu named Bhaddāli is one who does not fulfil the training in the Teacher's dispensation."' This circumstance too, Bhaddāli, was not penetrated by you.
"Moreover, Bhaddāli, this circumstance was not penetrated by you: 'Many laymen (upāsaka) reside at Sāvatthī; they too will know me thus: "The bhikkhu named Bhaddāli is one who does not fulfil the training in the Teacher's dispensation."' This circumstance too, Bhaddāli, was not penetrated by you.
"Moreover, Bhaddāli, this circumstance was not penetrated by you: 'Many laywomen (upāsikā) reside at Sāvatthī; they too will know me thus: "The bhikkhu named Bhaddāli is one who does not fulfil the training in the Teacher's dispensation."' This circumstance too, Bhaddāli, was not penetrated by you.
"Moreover, Bhaddāli, this circumstance was not penetrated by you: 'Many ascetics and brahmins of various other sects have entered upon the rains residence at Sāvatthī; they too will know me thus: "The bhikkhu named Bhaddāli, a disciple of the ascetic Gotama, one of the elders, is one who does not fulfil the training in the Teacher's dispensation."' This circumstance too, Bhaddāli, was not penetrated by you."
"Venerable sir, a transgression overcame me — so foolish, so confused, so unskillful was I — in that, when a training rule was being laid down by the Blessed One and the community of bhikkhus was undertaking the training, I declared my unwillingness to endeavor in it. Venerable sir, may the Blessed One accept my transgression as a transgression, for the sake of restraint in the future."
