[167] Here, Bhaddāli, some bhikkhu fulfills the training in the Teacher's dispensation. It occurs to him thus: 'Suppose I were to resort to a secluded lodging — a forest, the root of a tree, a mountain, a ravine, a mountain cave, a charnel ground, a forest thicket, the open air, a heap of straw; perhaps I might realize a distinction of knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision worthy of the noble ones, surpassing the human state (uttari manussadhammā).' He resorts to a secluded lodging — a forest, the root of a tree, a mountain, a ravine, a mountain cave, a charnel ground, a forest thicket, the open air, a heap of straw. While he dwells thus withdrawn, the Teacher does not reprimand him, wise companions in the holy life, having examined him, do not reprimand him, deities do not reprimand him, and he himself does not reprimand himself. Being unreprimanded by the Teacher, unreprimanded by wise companions in the holy life who have examined him, unreprimanded by deities, and unreprimanded by himself, he realizes a distinction of knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones, surpassing the human state.
Quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, he enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by applied thought and sustained thought, with rapture (pīti) and happiness born of seclusion. Why is that? Because that, Bhaddāli, is how it is for one who fulfills the training in the Teacher's dispensation.
Again, Bhaddāli, with the stilling of applied thought and sustained thought, a bhikkhu enters and dwells in the second jhāna, which has internal confidence and unification of mind (citta), is without applied thought and without sustained thought, with rapture and happiness born of concentration (samādhi). Why is that? Because that, Bhaddāli, is how it is for one who fulfills the training in the Teacher's dispensation.
Again, Bhaddāli, with the fading away of rapture … a bhikkhu enters and dwells in the third jhāna. Why is that? Because that, Bhaddāli, is how it is for one who fulfills the training in the Teacher's dispensation.
Again, Bhaddāli, with the abandoning of pleasure … a bhikkhu enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna. Why is that? Because that, Bhaddāli, is how it is for one who fulfills the training in the Teacher's dispensation.
