[195] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Kosalans at Naḷakapāna, in the Palāsa Grove. Now on that occasion several very well-known clansmen (kulaputta) had gone forth out of faith from the home life into homelessness dedicated to the Blessed One — the venerable Anuruddha, the venerable Bhaddiya, the venerable Kimbila, the venerable Bhagu, the venerable Koṇḍañña, the venerable Revata, the venerable Ānanda, and other very well-known clansmen. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was seated in the open air, surrounded by the Saṅgha of bhikkhus (bhikkhu). Then the Blessed One, referring to those clansmen, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, those clansmen who have gone forth out of faith from the home life into homelessness dedicated to me — are they, bhikkhus, satisfied with the holy life (brahmacariya)?" Those bhikkhus were silent.
A second time the Blessed One, referring to those clansmen, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, those clansmen who have gone forth out of faith from the home life into homelessness dedicated to me — are those bhikkhus, bhikkhus, satisfied with the holy life?" A second time those bhikkhus were silent.
A third time the Blessed One, referring to those clansmen, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, those clansmen who have gone forth out of faith from the home life into homelessness dedicated to me — are those bhikkhus, bhikkhus, satisfied with the holy life?" A third time those bhikkhus were silent.
