[2] "So it is, Kandaraka, so it is, Kandaraka. Those Arahants, Perfectly Enlightened Ones who existed in the past — those Blessed Ones too led the Bhikkhu Saṅgha to right practice at most only to this extent, just as the Bhikkhu Saṅgha has now been led by me to right practice. And those Arahants, Perfectly Enlightened Ones who will exist in the future — those Blessed Ones too will lead the Bhikkhu Saṅgha to right practice at most only to this extent, just as the Bhikkhu Saṅgha has now been led by me to right practice.
"For, Kandaraka, there are in this Bhikkhu Saṅgha bhikkhus who are Arahants, whose taints (āsava) are destroyed, who have lived the life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, attained their own goal, utterly destroyed the fetters of existence, and who are liberated through final knowledge. And there are, Kandaraka, in this Bhikkhu Saṅgha bhikkhus who are trainees, of constant virtue, of constant conduct, prudent, of prudent conduct; they dwell with minds well established in the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna). In which four? Here, Kandaraka, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; he dwells contemplating feelings (vedanā) in feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; he dwells contemplating the mind (citta) in the mind, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world."
