[21] Again, householder, a bhikkhu abides pervading one direction with a mind imbued with loving-kindness (mettā), likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; so too above, below, across, everywhere, in every way, he abides pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness — abundant, exalted, measureless, without enmity, without ill will. He reflects thus: 'This liberation of mind through loving-kindness (mettā cetovimutti) too is conditioned (abhisaṅkhata) and intentionally produced (abhisañcetayita); and whatever is conditioned and intentionally produced is impermanent, subject to cessation' — thus he understands. Standing therein, … he attains the unsurpassed security from bondage (yogakkhema).
Again, householder, a bhikkhu with a mind imbued with compassion (karuṇā) … with a mind imbued with altruistic joy (muditā) … abides pervading one direction with a mind imbued with equanimity (upekkhā), likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; so too above, below, across, everywhere, in every way, he abides pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with equanimity — abundant, exalted, measureless, without enmity, without ill will. He reflects thus: 'This liberation of mind through equanimity too is conditioned and intentionally produced; and whatever is conditioned and intentionally produced is impermanent, subject to cessation' — thus he understands. Standing therein, … he attains the unsurpassed security from bondage.
