[225] "Bhikkhus, do you understand the Dhamma taught by me thus: 'Whatever this person experiences—whether pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant—his unwholesome states (akusalā dhammā) decline and his wholesome states (kusalā dhammā) increase'?"

"Bhikkhus, do you not understand the Dhamma taught by me thus: 'Here, when a certain person feels a pleasant feeling (vedanā) of such a kind, unwholesome states increase and wholesome states decline; but here, when a certain person feels a pleasant feeling of such a kind, unwholesome states decline and wholesome states increase. Here, when a certain person feels a painful feeling of such a kind, unwholesome states increase and wholesome states decline; but here, when a certain person feels a painful feeling of such a kind, unwholesome states decline and wholesome states increase. Here, when a certain person feels a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling of such a kind, unwholesome states increase and wholesome states decline; but here, when a certain person feels a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling of such a kind, unwholesome states decline and wholesome states increase'?"
