[23] When this was said, Dasama the householder, a citizen of Aṭṭhakanagara, said to the Venerable Ānanda: "Venerable Ānanda, just as a man seeking one entrance to a hidden treasure (nidhimukha) might come upon eleven entrances to hidden treasure all at once, even so, venerable sir, while I was seeking one door to the Deathless (amatadvāra), I have all at once obtained eleven doors to the Deathless through hearing. Just as, venerable sir, a man's house might have eleven doors, and when that house was ablaze he would be able to make himself safe by even a single one of those doors, even so, venerable sir, I shall be able to make myself safe by even a single one of these eleven doors to the Deathless. Venerable sir, these adherents of other sects will indeed seek out a teacher's fee for their teacher; why then should I not make an offering to the Venerable Ānanda?"
Then Dasama the householder, a citizen of Aṭṭhakanagara, having assembled the Saṅgha of bhikkhus from Pāṭaliputta and Vesālī, with his own hands served and satisfied them with excellent hard and soft foods (khādanīya-bhojanīya). He clothed each bhikkhu individually with a pair of cloths; he clothed the Venerable Ānanda with a set of three robes; and he had a dwelling worth five hundred built for the Venerable Ānanda.
