[249] "But, Master Gotama, when asked, 'A bhikkhu whose mind (citta) is thus liberated—where does he reappear?' you say, 'Vaccha, "he reappears" does not apply.' Then, Master Gotama, when asked, 'Does he then not reappear?' you say, 'Vaccha, "he does not reappear" does not apply.' Then, Master Gotama, when asked, 'Does he then both reappear and not reappear?' you say, 'Vaccha, "he both reappears and does not reappear" does not apply.' Then, Master Gotama, when asked, 'Does he then neither reappear nor not reappear?' you say, 'Vaccha, "he neither reappears nor does not reappear" does not apply.' Here, Master Gotama, I have fallen into unknowing; here I have fallen into confusion. And even that measure of confidence which I had gained from Master Gotama's earlier conversation—that too has now vanished from me."
