[253] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Veḷuvana, the Squirrels' Feeding Ground (Kalandakanivāpa). Then the wanderer Vacchagotta approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the wanderer Vacchagotta said this to the Blessed One: "For a long time I have been one who converses with the worthy Gotama. It would be good if the worthy Gotama would teach me in brief what is wholesome and what is unwholesome (kusalākusala)."
"Vaccha, I could teach you in brief what is wholesome and what is unwholesome; and I could also teach you in detail, Vaccha, what is wholesome and what is unwholesome. Nevertheless, Vaccha, I shall teach you in brief what is wholesome and what is unwholesome. Listen to it and attend well; I shall speak."
"So be it, worthy sir," the wanderer Vacchagotta replied to the Blessed One.
