[255] "Let the worthy Gotama stand aside — but is there a single bhikkhu, a disciple of the worthy Gotama, who, through the destruction of the taints (āsava), has realized for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti), and, having entered upon it, dwells therein?"
"Vaccha, not merely one hundred, not two hundred, not three hundred, not four hundred, not five hundred — rather, Vaccha, far more indeed are the bhikkhus, my disciples, who, through the destruction of the taints, have realized for themselves with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and, having entered upon it, dwell therein."
