[287] Then the Blessed One, on that occasion, uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
Health (ārogya) is the foremost of gains;
Nibbāna is the highest happiness;
and of paths, the eightfold is the secure one,
leading to the deathless.
When this was said, the wanderer Māgaṇḍiya said to the Blessed One: "It is wonderful, worthy Gotama! It is marvellous, worthy Gotama! How well spoken is this by the worthy Gotama: 'Health is the foremost of gains; Nibbāna is the highest happiness.' I too, worthy Gotama, have heard this said by wanderers of former times, teachers and teachers' teachers: 'Health is the foremost of gains; Nibbāna is the highest happiness.' And this, worthy Gotama, agrees with that."
"But, Māgaṇḍiya, as to what you have heard said by wanderers of former times, teachers and teachers' teachers: 'Health is the foremost of gains; Nibbāna is the highest happiness'—what is that health? What is that Nibbāna?"
When this was said, the wanderer Māgaṇḍiya stroked his own limbs with his hand, saying: "This, worthy Gotama, is that health; this is that Nibbāna. For I, worthy Gotama, am now healthy and happy; nothing whatever afflicts me."
