[303] "It is wonderful, worthy Ānanda, it is marvelous, worthy Ānanda, how these four ways that negate the living of the spiritual life (abrahmacariyavāsā) — being in truth no living of the spiritual life at all — have been declared to be no living of the spiritual life by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One; wherein a sensible person would, to the best of his ability, not live the spiritual life, and even if he did live it, he would not accomplish the true way, the wholesome Dhamma (ñāyaṃ dhammaṃ kusalaṃ). But what, worthy Ānanda, are those four unreliable kinds of spiritual life (anassāsikāni brahmacariyāni) that have been declared by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One, wherein a sensible person would, to the best of his ability, not live the spiritual life, and even if he did live it, he would not accomplish the true way, the wholesome Dhamma?"
