[343] "Again, Udāyi, I have declared to my disciples the way of practice (paṭipadā), and practicing in accordance with it, my disciples develop the four jhānas (jhāna).
"Here, Udāyi, a bhikkhu, secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by applied thought (vitakka) and sustained thought (vicāra), with rapture and pleasure born of seclusion. He drenches, steeps, fills, and pervades this very body with the rapture and pleasure born of seclusion, so that there is no part of his whole body untouched by the rapture and pleasure born of seclusion. Just as, Udāyi, a skilled bath-attendant or a bath-attendant's apprentice might heap bath-powder into a bronze basin and, sprinkling it gradually with water, knead it, so that the ball of bath-powder is suffused with moisture, saturated with moisture, pervaded by moisture inside and out, yet does not ooze—even so, Udāyi, a bhikkhu drenches, steeps, fills, and pervades this very body with the rapture and pleasure born of seclusion, so that there is no part of his whole body untouched by the rapture and pleasure born of seclusion."
