[356] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now on that occasion the wanderer (paribbājaka) Uggāhamāna, son of Samaṇamuṇḍikā (Samaṇamuṇḍikāputta), was residing at Mallikā's park — the single-halled (ekasālaka) debating hall for the proclamation of doctrines (samayappavādaka), hedged about with tiṇḍuka trees — together with a great company of wanderers, some five hundred wanderers. Then Pañcakaṅga the carpenter (thapati) went out from Sāvatthī in the middle of the day to see the Blessed One. Then it occurred to Pañcakaṅga the carpenter: "This is not the right time to see the Blessed One; the Blessed One is in seclusion. Nor is it the right occasion to see the bhikkhus who are worthy of esteem (manobhāvanīya); the bhikkhus worthy of esteem are in seclusion. Suppose I were to approach the wanderer Uggāhamāna Samaṇamuṇḍikāputta at Mallikā's park, the single-halled debating hall hedged about with tiṇḍuka trees." Then Pañcakaṅga the carpenter approached Mallikā's park, the single-halled debating hall hedged about with tiṇḍuka trees.
