[358] Then Uggāhamāna the wanderer, Samaṇamuṇḍikāputta, said this to Pañcakaṅga the carpenter (thapati) as he sat to one side: "Carpenter, I declare a person (purisapuggala) possessed of four qualities to be one accomplished in the wholesome (kusala), supreme in the wholesome, an ascetic attained to the highest attainment, invincible (ayojjha). What are the four? Here, carpenter, one does no evil deed with the body, speaks no evil speech, intends no evil intention, and does not live by an evil livelihood. Possessed of these four qualities, carpenter, I declare a person to be one accomplished in the wholesome, supreme in the wholesome, an ascetic attained to the highest attainment, invincible."
Then Pañcakaṅga the carpenter neither delighted in nor rejected the statement of Uggāhamāna the wanderer, Samaṇamuṇḍikāputta. Neither delighting in it nor rejecting it, he rose from his seat and departed, thinking, "I shall come to understand the meaning of this statement in the presence of the Blessed One." Then Pañcakaṅga the carpenter approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Pañcakaṅga the carpenter reported to the Blessed One the entire conversation, as far as it had gone, that he had had with Uggāhamāna the wanderer, Samaṇamuṇḍikāputta.
