[362] "And what, carpenter, are unskillful behaviors (akusalā sīlā)? Unskillful bodily action, unskillful verbal action, and evil livelihood — these, carpenter, are called unskillful behaviors.
"And what is the origin of these unskillful behaviors, carpenter? Their origin too has been stated: it should be said that they originate from the mind (citta). What mind? The mind is indeed manifold, of many kinds, of diverse aspects. Whatever mind is accompanied by lust (rāga), accompanied by hatred, accompanied by delusion — unskillful behaviors originate from this.
"And where, carpenter, do these unskillful behaviors cease without remainder? Their cessation too has been stated. Here, carpenter, a bhikkhu, having abandoned bodily misconduct, develops good bodily conduct; having abandoned verbal misconduct, develops good verbal conduct; having abandoned mental misconduct, develops good mental conduct; having abandoned wrong livelihood, he makes his living by right livelihood. It is here that these unskillful behaviors cease without remainder.
"Practising how, carpenter, is one practising for the cessation of unskillful behaviors? Here, carpenter, a bhikkhu generates desire (chanda), strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavors for the non-arising of evil, unskillful states that have not yet arisen; he generates desire, strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavors for the abandoning of evil, unskillful states that have arisen; he generates desire, strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavors for the arising of skillful states that have not yet arisen; he generates desire, strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavors for the persistence, non-loss, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of skillful states that have arisen. One practising thus, carpenter, is practising for the cessation of unskillful behaviors."
