[41] "'Lying (musāvāda) should be given up, relying on truthful speech (sacca vācā).' So it was said; and with reference to what was this said? Here, householder, a noble disciple reflects thus: 'I am practicing for the abandoning and cutting off of those fetters (saṃyojana) on account of which I might be a speaker of falsehood. If I were to speak falsehood, I myself might reproach myself on account of lying; the wise, having investigated, might censure me on account of lying; and on the breakup of the body, after death, a bad destination (duggati) would be expected on account of lying. This very lying is itself a fetter, it is a hindrance (nīvaraṇa). And whereas taints (āsava), distressing and feverish, might arise on account of lying, for one who abstains from lying those distressing and feverish taints do not occur.' 'Lying should be given up, relying on truthful speech'—so what was said, it was with reference to this that it was said."
