[446] "There are indeed, great king, four summaries of the Dhamma (dhammuddesa) taught by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One, which having known and seen and heard, I went forth from the home life into homelessness. What are the four?
'The world is swept away; it is unstable' — this, great king, is the first summary of the Dhamma taught by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One, which having known and seen and heard, I went forth from the home life into homelessness.
'The world is without shelter, without an overlord' — this, great king, is the second summary of the Dhamma taught by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One, which having known and seen and heard, I went forth from the home life into homelessness.
'The world owns nothing; one must leave all behind and pass on' — this, great king, is the third summary of the Dhamma taught by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One, which having known and seen and heard, I went forth from the home life into homelessness.
'The world is deficient, insatiate, a slave to craving (taṇhā)' — this, great king, is the fourth summary of the Dhamma taught by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One, which having known and seen and heard, I went forth from the home life into homelessness.
These, great king, are the four summaries of the Dhamma taught by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One, which having known and seen and heard, I went forth from the home life into homelessness."
