[487] When he had sat down at one side, the brahmin student Sañjikāputta said this to the Blessed One: "Worthy Gotama, Prince Bodhi bows with his head at the feet of the worthy Gotama; he asks whether you are free from affliction, free from illness, buoyant, strong, and dwelling in comfort; and he says this: 'May the worthy Gotama, together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus (bhikkhu), consent to accept tomorrow's meal from Prince Bodhi.'" The Blessed One consented by silence.
Then the brahmin student Sañjikāputta, having understood the Blessed One's consent, rose from his seat and approached Prince Bodhi; having approached, he said this to Prince Bodhi: "In your name we have said to that worthy Gotama: 'Worthy Gotama, Prince Bodhi bows with his head at the feet of the worthy Gotama; he asks whether you are free from affliction, free from illness, buoyant, strong, and dwelling in comfort; and he says this: May the worthy Gotama, together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, consent to accept tomorrow's meal from Prince Bodhi.' And the ascetic Gotama has accepted."
Then, when that night had passed, Prince Bodhi had delicious hard and soft food prepared in his residence, and had the Kokanuda Palace spread with white cloths down to the lowest step of the staircase. Then he addressed the brahmin student Sañjikāputta: "Come, dear Sañjikāputta, go to the Blessed One; having approached, announce the time to the Blessed One: 'It is time, venerable sir; the meal is ready.'"
"Yes, sir," the brahmin student Sañjikāputta replied to Prince Bodhi; and he approached the Blessed One, and having approached, announced the time to the Blessed One: "It is time, worthy Gotama; the meal is ready."
