[507] "When my mind (citta) was thus concentrated (samādhi), purified, bright, unblemished, rid of corruptions (upakkilesa), malleable, wieldy, steady, and attained to imperturbability, I directed the mind toward the knowledge (ñāṇa) of the passing away and reappearance of beings. With the divine eye (dibbacakkhu), purified and surpassing the human, I saw beings passing away and reappearing—inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly in complexion, faring well and faring ill … I understood beings as faring according to their actions (kamma). This, Prince, was the second true knowledge (vijjā) attained by me in the middle watch of the night. Ignorance was dispelled, true knowledge arose; darkness was dispelled, light arose—as it happens for one who dwells diligent, ardent, and resolute."
