[510] "Then, Prince, Brahmā Sahampati, knowing with his own mind the reflection in my mind, thought: 'Alas, sirs, the world is lost! Alas, sirs, the world perishes! — in that the mind of the Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One, inclines to inaction, not to teaching the Dhamma.' Then, Prince, just as a strong man might extend his flexed arm or flex his extended arm, even so did Brahmā Sahampati vanish from the Brahmā world and appear before me. Then, Prince, Brahmā Sahampati, having arranged his upper robe over one shoulder and raised his joined palms in reverence toward me, said this: 'Venerable sir, let the Blessed One teach the Dhamma; let the Sublime One (Sugata) teach the Dhamma. There are beings with little dust in their eyes who are declining through not hearing the Dhamma; there will be those who understand the Dhamma.' Thus spoke Brahmā Sahampati, Prince; and having said this, he further said this:
'In the past there appeared among the Magadhans
an impure Dhamma, devised by those with stains.
Open this door to the Deathless (amata)!
Let them hear the Dhamma awakened to by the Stainless One.
Just as one standing upon a rocky mountain-peak
might behold the people all around,
even so, O wise one, O All-seeing One,
ascend the palace made of Dhamma,
and, being yourself free from sorrow, look upon the people
sunk in sorrow, overcome by birth and aging (jāti-jarā).
Rise up, O hero, victor in battle!
O caravan leader, free of debt, wander in the world.
Let the Blessed One teach the Dhamma;
there will be those who understand.'"
