[538] Then this topic of conversation gradually made its way into the royal palace. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala addressed Queen Mallikā: "Mallikā, this has been said by your ascetic Gotama: 'Sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair are born from those who are dear, arise from those who are dear.'"
"If, great king, that was said by the Blessed One, then so it is."
"No matter what the ascetic Gotama says, this Mallikā approves of it thus: 'If, great king, that was said by the Blessed One, then so it is.' Just as a pupil approves of whatever his teacher says, saying, 'So it is, teacher! So it is, teacher!' — even so, Mallikā, no matter what the ascetic Gotama says, you approve of it thus: 'If, great king, that was said by the Blessed One, then so it is.' Go away, Mallikā! Be gone!"
