[560] Then King Pasenadi of Kosala mounted a fine carriage and, with the finest carriages, set out from Nagaraka with great royal pomp, and headed for the park. He went by carriage as far as the ground was passable for carriages; then, dismounting from the carriage, he entered the park on foot. As he was walking and wandering about the park for exercise, King Pasenadi of Kosala saw tree-roots that were lovely and inspiring, quiet, free from noise, with an atmosphere untrafficked by people, suited to what men would do in privacy, fitting for seclusion. On seeing them, rapture (pīti) arose in him with reference to the Blessed One: "These indeed are such tree-roots — lovely and inspiring, quiet, free from noise, with an atmosphere untrafficked by people, suited to what men would do in privacy, fitting for seclusion — where we used to pay respects to that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One."
Then King Pasenadi of Kosala addressed Dīgha Kārāyana: "Friend Kārāyana, these indeed are such tree-roots — lovely and inspiring, quiet, free from noise, with an atmosphere untrafficked by people, suited to what men would do in privacy, fitting for seclusion — where we used to pay respects to that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One. Where, friend Kārāyana, is that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One, now dwelling?"
"There is, great king, a town of the Sakyans named Medaḷupa; there that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One, is now dwelling."
"But how far, friend Kārāyana, is the Sakyan town named Medaḷupa from Nagaraka?"
"It is not far, great king — three yojanas; it is possible to get there with the remainder of the day."
"Then, friend Kārāyana, have the finest carriages harnessed; we shall go to see that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One."
"Even so, sire," Dīgha Kārāyana replied to King Pasenadi of Kosala; and having had the finest carriages harnessed, he informed King Pasenadi of Kosala: "Sire, the finest carriages have been harnessed for you; now is the time for whatever you deem fit."
