[565] "Furthermore, venerable sir, I am a khattiya king, anointed on the head (muddhāvasitta); I am able to execute one who deserves execution, to fine one who deserves a fine, and to banish one who deserves banishment. Yet, venerable sir, while I am sitting in judgement, people interrupt me with talk again and again; and I cannot get them to comply when I say: 'Good sirs, do not interrupt me with talk while I am sitting in judgement; let the good sirs wait until the end of my speech.' Thus, venerable sir, they interrupt me with talk again and again. But here, venerable sir, I see bhikkhus: on an occasion when the Blessed One is teaching the Dhamma to an assembly of many hundreds, at that time there is no sound of sneezing or of clearing the throat among the Blessed One's disciples. Once, venerable sir, the Blessed One was teaching the Dhamma to an assembly of many hundreds, and there a certain disciple of the Blessed One cleared his throat. Then a certain companion in the holy life nudged him with his knee, to indicate: 'Let the venerable one be quiet; let the venerable one make no sound. Our Teacher, the Blessed One, is teaching the Dhamma.' Venerable sir, it occurred to me: 'It is wonderful indeed! It is marvellous indeed! That an assembly should be so well disciplined without rod, without sword!' Venerable sir, I do not see any other assembly outside of this so well disciplined. This too, venerable sir, is my inference from the Dhamma (dhammanvaya) regarding the Blessed One: 'The Blessed One is fully awakened; the Dhamma is well proclaimed by the Blessed One; the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practising well.'"
