[57] "Jīvaka, those who speak thus: 'They slaughter living beings on purpose for the ascetic Gotama, and the ascetic Gotama, knowing this, eats meat prepared specifically for him — a deed done on his account' — they do not speak as I have spoken, and they misrepresent me with what is untrue and contrary to fact. Jīvaka, I say that in three cases meat is not to be eaten: when it is seen, heard, or suspected. In these three cases, Jīvaka, I say that meat is not to be eaten. Jīvaka, I say that in three cases meat may be eaten: when it is not seen, not heard, and not suspected. In these three cases, Jīvaka, I say that meat may be eaten."
