[588] Then it occurred to the young brahmin Uttara: "The ascetic Gotama is endowed with the thirty-two marks of a great man (mahāpurisalakkhaṇa). What if I were to follow the ascetic Gotama and observe his postures (iriyāpatha)?" Then the young brahmin Uttara followed the Blessed One for seven months, like a shadow that never departs. Then, at the end of seven months, the young brahmin Uttara set out wandering in the Videhan country towards Mithilā. Wandering by stages, he arrived at Mithilā, approached the brahmin Brahmāyu, and having approached, he paid homage to the brahmin Brahmāyu and sat down to one side. As the young brahmin Uttara was seated to one side, the brahmin Brahmāyu said this to him: "Well, dear Uttara, has the report that has spread abroad concerning that worthy Gotama arisen of one who truly is so, and not otherwise? And is that worthy Gotama indeed of such a kind, and not of another kind?"
