[60] "Jīvaka, whoever slaughters a living creature intending it specifically for the Tathāgata or a disciple of the Tathāgata generates much demerit (apuñña) on five grounds. In that this householder says thus: 'Go, fetch the living creature of such-and-such a name' — on this first ground he generates much demerit. In that this living creature, being led along by a tether at its throat, experiences pain and grief (dukkhadomanassa) — on this second ground he generates much demerit. In that he says thus: 'Go, slaughter this living creature' — on this third ground he generates much demerit. In that this living creature, while being slaughtered, experiences pain and grief — on this fourth ground he generates much demerit. In that he gratifies the Tathāgata or a disciple of the Tathāgata with what is unallowable (akappiya) — on this fifth ground he generates much demerit. Jīvaka, whoever slaughters a living creature intending it specifically for the Tathāgata or a disciple of the Tathāgata generates much demerit on these five grounds."
