[660] (Kāpaṭhika:) "We asked the worthy Gotama about the preservation of truth (saccānurakkhaṇā), and the worthy Gotama has answered about the preservation of truth; that pleases us and is acceptable to us, and therefore we are gratified. We asked the worthy Gotama about the awakening to truth (saccānubodha), and the worthy Gotama has answered about the awakening to truth; that pleases us and is acceptable to us, and therefore we are gratified. We asked the worthy Gotama about the attainment of truth (saccānuppatti), and the worthy Gotama has answered about the attainment of truth; that pleases us and is acceptable to us, and therefore we are gratified. We asked the worthy Gotama about the dhamma of great assistance to the attainment of truth, and the worthy Gotama has answered about the dhamma of great assistance to the attainment of truth; that pleases us and is acceptable to us, and therefore we are gratified. Whatever we asked the worthy Gotama, that very thing the worthy Gotama has answered; that pleases us and is acceptable to us, and therefore we are gratified.
"For formerly, worthy Gotama, we knew thus: 'Who are these shaveling petty ascetics, menials, swarthy ones, offspring of the Kinsman's feet — and who are they to be knowers of the Dhamma?' Truly, the worthy Gotama has aroused in me love for ascetics as ascetics, confidence in ascetics as ascetics, and respect for ascetics as ascetics.
"Magnificent, worthy Gotama! Magnificent, worthy Gotama! … May the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower (upāsaka) who has gone for refuge for life, from this day forth."
