[662] When he had sat down to one side, the brahmin Esukārī said this to the Blessed One: "Master Gotama, the brahmins prescribe four kinds of service (pāricariyā): they prescribe the service of a brahmin, they prescribe the service of a khattiya (noble), they prescribe the service of a vessa (merchant-farmer class), and they prescribe the service of a sudda (menial class). Herein, Master Gotama, the brahmins prescribe this as the service of a brahmin: a brahmin may serve a brahmin, or a khattiya may serve a brahmin, or a vessa may serve a brahmin, or a sudda may serve a brahmin — thus, Master Gotama, do the brahmins prescribe the service of a brahmin. Herein, Master Gotama, the brahmins prescribe this as the service of a khattiya: a khattiya may serve a khattiya, or a vessa may serve a khattiya, or a sudda may serve a khattiya — thus, Master Gotama, do the brahmins prescribe the service of a khattiya. Herein, Master Gotama, the brahmins prescribe this as the service of a vessa: a vessa may serve a vessa, or a sudda may serve a vessa — thus, Master Gotama, do the brahmins prescribe the service of a vessa. Herein, Master Gotama, the brahmins prescribe this as the service of a sudda: only a sudda may serve a sudda; for who else would serve a sudda? — thus, Master Gotama, do the brahmins prescribe the service of a sudda. These, Master Gotama, are the four kinds of service that the brahmins prescribe. What does the worthy Gotama say to this?"
