[668] "In the same way, brahmin, if one has gone forth from the household life into homelessness even from a khattiya family, and, relying on the Dhamma and Discipline proclaimed by the Tathāgata, he is one who refrains from killing living beings, refrains from taking what is not given, refrains from unchastity, refrains from false speech, refrains from divisive speech, refrains from harsh speech, refrains from idle chatter, is not covetous, has a mind (citta) without ill will, and holds right view — he is one who succeeds in the true way, the wholesome Dhamma. If even from a brahmin family, brahmin … if even from a vessa family, brahmin … if even from a sudda family, brahmin, one has gone forth from the household life into homelessness, and, relying on the Dhamma and Discipline proclaimed by the Tathāgata, he is one who refrains from killing living beings, refrains from taking what is not given, refrains from unchastity, refrains from false speech, refrains from divisive speech, refrains from harsh speech, refrains from idle chatter, is not covetous, has a mind without ill will, and holds right view — he is one who succeeds in the true way, the wholesome Dhamma. What do you think, brahmin? Is it only a brahmin who is able to take a scrubber and bath powder, go to the river, and wash off dust and dirt, and not a khattiya, not a vessa, not a sudda?"
"Not so, worthy Gotama. A khattiya too, worthy Gotama, is able to take a scrubber and bath powder, go to the river, and wash off dust and dirt; a brahmin too, worthy Gotama … a vessa too, worthy Gotama … a sudda too, worthy Gotama … indeed, worthy Gotama, all four castes are able to take a scrubber and bath powder, go to the river, and wash off dust and dirt."
