[689] "What do you think, Dhanañjāni? Which is better: one who, for the sake of friends and colleagues, behaves contrary to the Dhamma and behaves unrighteously, or one who, for the sake of friends and colleagues, behaves in accordance with the Dhamma and behaves righteously?"
"Worthy Sāriputta, one who, for the sake of friends and colleagues, behaves contrary to the Dhamma and behaves unrighteously — that is not better; but one who, for the sake of friends and colleagues, behaves in accordance with the Dhamma and behaves righteously — that alone is better here. For, worthy Sāriputta, conduct in accordance with the Dhamma and righteous conduct are better than conduct contrary to the Dhamma and unrighteous conduct."
"Dhanañjāni, there are other kinds of work, having a source of gain (sahetukā) and righteous, by which one is able both to do one's duty to friends and colleagues, and yet not to do evil deeds, and to practice the way of merit."
