[69] "What do you think, householder? Suppose there were here a Nigaṇṭha who was afflicted, suffering, gravely ill, one who refuses cold water and uses only hot water. Not obtaining cold water, he would die. Now, householder, where does the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta declare the rebirth of this one?"
"Venerable sir, there are gods called 'mind-bound' (manosattā); he is reborn there. Why is that? Because, venerable sir, he dies with his mind attached."
"Householder, householder! Attend carefully; and having attended carefully, householder, answer. What you said after does not cohere with what you said before, nor what you said before with what you said after. And yet, householder, these words were spoken by you: 'Venerable sir, I will confer standing upon truth; let there be some discussion between us on this matter.'"
"Venerable sir, even though the Blessed One says this, still it is the bodily rod (kāyadaṇḍa) alone that is the more greatly blameworthy for the performance of an evil deed (kamma), for the perpetration of an evil deed — not so the verbal rod, not so the mental rod."
