[705] Then the brahmin student (māṇava) Vāseṭṭha addressed the brahmin student Bhāradvāja: "Sir Bhāradvāja, this ascetic (samaṇa) Gotama, the son of the Sakyans, who has gone forth from a Sakyan family, is dwelling at Icchānaṅgala, in the Icchānaṅgala forest thicket. Now concerning that Master Gotama a fair report of fame has spread abroad thus: 'That Blessed One is indeed an Arahant, a Perfectly Awakened One (sammāsambuddha), accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct, sublime (sugata), a knower of the world, an unsurpassed charioteer of persons to be tamed, a teacher of gods and humans, the Awakened One, the Blessed One.' Come, sir Bhāradvāja, let us go to the ascetic Gotama; and having approached him, let us ask the ascetic Gotama about this matter. As the ascetic Gotama answers us, so shall we bear it in mind." "Yes, sir," the brahmin student Bhāradvāja replied to the brahmin student Vāseṭṭha. Then the brahmin students Vāseṭṭha and Bhāradvāja approached the Blessed One; having approached, they exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and amiable talk was concluded, they sat down to one side.
