[72] "Householder (gahapati), you should act only after due consideration (anuviccakāra); for well-known people such as yourself, it is good to act after due consideration."
"Venerable sir, by this too I am even more pleased and gratified with the Blessed One, in that the Blessed One says to me thus: 'Householder, you should act only after due consideration; for well-known people such as yourself, it is good to act after due consideration.' For, venerable sir, if the adherents of other sects (aññatitthiyā) had gained me as a disciple, they would have paraded a banner around the whole of Nāḷandā, proclaiming: 'The householder Upāli has come to discipleship under us!' And yet the Blessed One says to me thus: 'Householder, you should act only after due consideration; for well-known people such as yourself, it is good to act after due consideration.' Venerable sir, for the second time I go to the Blessed One for refuge, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May the Blessed One remember me as a lay follower (upāsaka) who has gone to him for refuge for life, from this day forth."
