[722] "These, student, are the five hindrances (nīvaraṇa). What five? The hindrance of sensual desire, the hindrance of ill will, the hindrance of dullness and drowsiness, the hindrance of restlessness and remorse, and the hindrance of doubt. These, student, are the five hindrances. Student, the brahmin Pokkharasāti Opamañña of the Subhaga Forest is obstructed, hindered, covered over, and enveloped by these five hindrances. That he should indeed know, or see, or realize a distinction in knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision worthy of the noble ones, surpassing the human state—this is not possible."
