[730] The Blessed One said this: "And what, student, is the path to companionship with Brahmā? Here, student, a bhikkhu dwells pervading one direction with a mind imbued with loving-kindness (mettā), likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; thus above, below, across, everywhere, in every way, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness — abundant, exalted (mahaggata), immeasurable, without enmity, without ill will. When the liberation of mind (cetovimutti) through loving-kindness has been developed in this way, student, whatever limited action (kamma) has been done will not remain there, will not persist there. Just as, student, a strong conch-blower might with little difficulty make himself heard throughout the four directions, even so, student, when the liberation of mind through loving-kindness has been developed in this way, whatever limited action has been done will not remain there, will not persist there. This, student, is a path to companionship with Brahmā.
Again, student, a bhikkhu … with a mind imbued with compassion … with a mind imbued with altruistic joy … dwells pervading one direction with a mind imbued with equanimity, likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; thus above, below, across, everywhere, in every way, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with equanimity — abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without enmity, without ill will. When the liberation of mind through equanimity has been developed in this way, student, whatever limited action has been done will not remain there, will not persist there. Just as, student, a strong conch-blower might with little difficulty make himself heard throughout the four directions, even so, student, when the liberation of mind through equanimity has been developed in this way, whatever limited action has been done will not remain there, will not persist there. This too, student, is a path to companionship with Brahmā."
