[77] Then Dīghatapassī the Nigaṇṭha approached the residence of the householder Upāli. The gatekeeper saw Dīghatapassī the Nigaṇṭha coming from afar, and having seen him, said this to Dīghatapassī the Nigaṇṭha: "Halt, venerable sir, do not enter. From this day forward the householder Upāli has gone to discipleship under the ascetic Gotama. The door is closed to Nigaṇṭha men and Nigaṇṭha women; the door is open to the Blessed One's disciples—the bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, laymen, and laywomen. If, venerable sir, you have need of almsfood, wait right here; they will bring it to you right here."
Saying, "Friend, I have no need of almsfood," he turned back from there and approached the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta; having approached, he said this to the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta: "It is indeed true, venerable sir, that the householder Upāli has gone to discipleship under the ascetic Gotama. Venerable sir, I could not get you to accept this from me when I said: 'Venerable sir, it does not please me that the householder Upāli should raise a refutation against the ascetic Gotama; for the ascetic Gotama, venerable sir, is a deceiver—he knows a converting magic (āvaṭṭanī māyā) by which he converts the disciples of those of other sects.' Venerable sir, your householder Upāli has been converted by the ascetic Gotama with his converting magic!"
"That is impossible, Dīghatapassī, it cannot come to pass, that the householder Upāli should go to discipleship under the ascetic Gotama; but this is possible—that the ascetic Gotama should go to discipleship under the householder Upāli."
A second time Dīghatapassī the Nigaṇṭha said this to the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta: "It is indeed true, venerable sir, that the householder Upāli has gone to discipleship under the ascetic Gotama. Venerable sir, I could not get you to accept this from me when I said: 'Venerable sir, it does not please me that the householder Upāli should raise a refutation against the ascetic Gotama; for the ascetic Gotama, venerable sir, is a deceiver—he knows a converting magic by which he converts the disciples of those of other sects.' Venerable sir, your householder Upāli has been converted by the ascetic Gotama with his converting magic!"
